Preparing Your House for a Pet Sitter

title: Preparing Your House for a Pet Sitter description: A few quick wins for setting up your home before a pet sitter arrives, so they can focus on your pet instead of hunting for supplies. date: "2020-10-21" image: /images/blog/preparing-your-house-for-a-pet-sitter/hero.jpg

We love caring for your pets, but a few minutes of prep before we arrive lets us focus on your fur babies instead of hunting around for their things. Here are our top tips for setting your home up so the transition is smooth.

Good order is the foundation

Centralize your pet supplies — or leave a clear note saying where everything is. If we're walking your dog, make sure the leash, harness, treats, and waste bags are easy to grab. If we're staying overnight, take a few extra minutes to organize the kitchen, the bedroom, and anything else we'll need to find quickly.

Stock up like you're preparing a bunker

A pet sitter can't give your pet full attention if they have to run to the store mid-stay. Leave enough food, treats, and medication for the time you're gone — plus a little extra for the just-in-case scenario. This matters especially if your pet is picky about a particular brand.

Put grown-up things out of reach

Pets are well-behaved on a regular day. But alone in a quiet house, curiosity wins. Cleaning products, medications, and human food should be secured behind a closed cabinet or up high. We'll watch them while we're there, but the moments we're not are the ones that matter most.

Prepare the sitter

If your pet takes medication or has special needs, write it down — dosing schedule, medical history, vet contact. Even short dog walks deserve a quick briefing on any reactivity, leash habits, or allergies. The more we know, the better we can care for them.
